Black H'Muong - dye your teeth with indigo when you reach 40 |
The Hoamg Lien Son mountain range that surround Sapa is at the very eastern end of the Himalayas. The town has all the requisites for a winter visit-hotels with windows that fit, doors that close and wait for it - central heating. Plus a load of rip off shops selling North Face etc. The mist hung over the valleys while we were there giving the vast hillsides an eerie feeling. So there will be no photos of green rice paddies.

Craft link from 1995 has worked closely with minority communities - who are at the greatest risk of being
left behind in Vietnam's rapidly changing economy - to generate income while revitalising traditional art forms.
With our guide, Hope, we walked through many alpine hamlets near the Chinese border like Ta Phin where Craft Link has provided training in tailoring, bookkeeping and management.

So successful are these ventures that the income insures that the community does not go hungry when the rice harvest fails. The Black H'mong renowned for their embroidered collars on their indigo coats have stitched these onto bags while the Flower H'Mong and Dao women have also adapted their designs.
